Yours Truly
A downloadable game for Windows and macOS
Yours Truly is a program that creates personalized experiences out of the data that Facebook has collected about you. It does not ask you to upload or share your personal information anywhere; instead, it runs locally on your computer to visualize the intrusive data collection practices done by Facebook.
Effy has been waiting desperately to have a chance to talk to you, but her conscience has been locked up in data servers for years. Follow the instructions to bring her to life:
- Download a build for your operating system and unzip it. If you are on MacOS, you should move the build file out of the Downloads folder into your desired location.
- Head to facebook.com/dyi.
- Under Request Copy, select JSON format as shown below.
- Deselect All by clicking on the button to the right of Your Information.
- Scroll down to select Ads and Businesses.
- Hit the Create File button, and wait for the notification that your information file is ready for download.
- Once you have the information downloaded and unzipped on your computer, place the ads_and_businesses folder right next to the build file.
On a Windows, your file structure should look like this:

If you are having trouble running the application on MacOS, try the following:
1. Open terminal.
2. Type ` sudo chmod -R 755 ` then drag and drop the application you are trying to open. This should end up looking something like `sudo chmod -R 755 /Users/username/somefolder/MacBuild.app` .
3. Press enter and enter your password when prompted.
4. Right click on the build file > Open. If this pops up a dialog about the app not being verified, click Open again.
You may also want to move the build file out of the Downloads folder if you have not already.
